GSM means grams per square meter. It tells you how much one square meter of the material weighs, not exactly how thick, strong, or waterproof the finished tarp is. Higher GSM usually means a heavier tarp, but construction and reinforcement still matter.
GSM is helpful because it lets you estimate total handling weight and compare fabrics on a common mass-per-area basis. It becomes misleading when a listing uses it as a substitute for tear strength, coating quality, UV resistance, or finished size.
What GSM means
A 180 GSM fabric has a nominal mass of 180 grams per square meter. If a rectangular tarp covers 30 m², the base material estimate is about 5.4 kg before hems, seams, grommets, rope reinforcement, patches, and absorbed moisture.

These are orientation ranges, not grades. A well-designed lighter tarp can be a better choice than a heavier poorly reinforced tarp. Product families also overlap: a coated woven polyethylene tarp and a PVC-coated polyester tarp at similar GSM may behave very differently.
Convert GSM to ounces per square yard
US fabric specifications may use ounces per square yard. Using the exact definitions of the avoirdupois ounce and international yard:

GSM ÷ 33.9057 = oz/yd²
oz/yd² × 33.9057 = GSM
For example, 18 oz/yd² is about 610 GSM. This is a mass-per-area conversion. It does not convert coating thickness or predict finished tarp weight without the tarp area.
What GSM does not tell you
- Thickness: two materials can have similar mass but different density and construction.
- Tensile or tear strength: fiber, scrim count, weave, coating, and test method matter.
- Waterproof performance: seams, pinholes, coating continuity, and hydrostatic testing matter.
- UV life: stabilizers and actual exposure conditions matter.
- Grommet strength: load depends on reinforcement and how force is distributed.
- Finished size: hems and manufacturing tolerances are separate specifications.
How to choose a practical range
Start with the environment and handling cycle. A cover used once indoors does not need the same mass and reinforcement as a tarp pulled over steel edges every day. Consider wind exposure, abrasion, sun, temperature, folding frequency, water routing, and how many people will lift it.
Then estimate the total weight. Increasing both size and GSM can make a tarp unexpectedly hard to deploy. A 30 × 50 ft tarp at 610 GSM has a base-material estimate around 201 lb before hardware—far beyond casual one-person handling.
Do not choose by GSM alone
Ask for finished dimensions, material construction, coating, reinforcement details, seam method, grommet spacing, and any relevant test results. A precise GSM number beside vague performance claims is still an incomplete specification.
How to verify a product listing
- Confirm whether GSM applies to the finished coated fabric or only a base cloth.
- Look for a tolerance, not just a single exact-looking number.
- Compare total finished weight with the area-based estimate; large differences deserve an explanation.
- Check that ounces means ounces per square yard, not total tarp ounces.
- Keep GSM separate from mil thickness.
